Distance Race Day

Panic in the hallway

The day started off rather suddenly when we got the message that the race was scheduled much earlier than announced.

Oh well, we got a taxi and changed into kayaking clothes while waiting for it outside. Must have been a sight, seeing grown adults change into their underwear while hopping on one leg and trying to load their gear into the taxi at the same time. Some fifteen minutes later we were already carrying our kayaks to the beach. Today was a tide day and the beach was rocky, not sandy like yesterday.

On the water

I got the news that this race was not for old guys like me. I had to wait for the next one. So the grown up men's class had a 3,700m course, where Norwegian Jon David won decisively, while women and old farts like me had 3,800m to paddle. Clever. Now you can't just simply compare times and be done with it, there still needs to be speculation into who would have been fastest if this or that had not happened... whatever this or that might be.

Another go

Just when I thought the race was almost finished, my stupid lead boat did another turn and we had to go around one more lap. Oh joy for sore muscles! Someone had told me this race would be shorter, so what does one do but summon up some sea demons with a few steamy curses and trudge on? Apparently my curses were sufficient to get me to the goal.

Dubside and Jon Pedersen were in my class, all of us racing along with the women. The other Swedish participants were Karin, Charlotte and Carolina. Oh well, we all won! I just finished the paddling joy slightly earlier ;)
