Race with portage

Jon David did it again

The SuperNorse God Of Kayaking paddled and ran with his kayak faster than anyone else today too. Dude was barefoot. He is competing in the 50+ category so there is no real comparison but winning with such a margin (again) speaks for itself.

It seems transitions and water ingress were factors which the competitors had to deal with, all in their own way and with various degrees of success. Some would have to stop and empty their kayaks. Helpers were allowed but they can't easily cover all posts and transitions. Also kayak weights took their toll on some. Not on Jon David.

Long after the comp

When all the other competitors felt hammered and sore, you could see Jon David collecting his medal and hurry down to the local sailor's bar (yes, real sailors) together with his daughter Natalie, her boyfriend Ask, who was also in the race and finished 2nd in his age group. Other kayakers were mildly interested in football (the real foot-ball) but came along for the experience and hang out (for quite a while) with the friendly locals at the bar. Brazil vs. Norway was on and Norway won! The place was packed and the roar when Norway made their goals was deafening. As it should be.

Inspiration for everyone

Some of us needed inspiration more than others and hung out a bit more...Some American team members were asking for forgiveness because of some president or the other, but people seemed interested to know more about their lives than the statements and claims they've heard from officials. So people from different countries, continents and beliefs gathered under a lot but friendly discussion. We shared pictures of our kayak builds, kids, travels, ugly dogs. My laughing muscles are still sore.

Midnight sun

The fact the sun was up when we went home, we blame on the midnight sun...south of the Polar Circle, yeah, but I could have sworn it was up. Say what you will but kayaking can take a toll on cognition after a few sports drinks ;)
