A “Seal” Deck Bag

Seal deck bag roll closure

Almost forgot about this one until Bjørn, a devoted kayaker from Norway, contacted me again last summer to order more stuff in the same style. This is a semi water tight deck bag for your skin on frame kayak. It’s front attachment points are good enough for normal use but if you want the bag to never drag in the water, you also have an attachment point in the rear to fix it with. For that you preferrably sew an extra string loop when you make your kayak. Nerdy stuff, I know.

Packing volume is not my rolling kayaks’ forte and I use them for wave play and light touring too. Since I am not all that good at fishing, I bring my own food and stuff it inside the bag. For water, you need to keep it low and preferrably fix it there for balance.

The bag is made out of tent cotton canvas which I impregnate with wax. It gives a decent 99,9% waterproofness, depending of the size of your waves. All my roll closure bags leak over time. This one, if it leaks, iron it and it stops leaking. The wax makes it resistant to severe abuse.

Below is my first seal bag on my latest kayak, both still going strong. Picture taken at Lilla Grisskär, outside of Nynäshamn.
